2012 Hyundai Accent Gets Surprise Unveil at Montreal Auto Show

Hot on the heels of the debut of the Veloster at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Hyundai has unwrapped the all-new 2012 Accent at the Montreal Auto Show. This comes as a surprise as Hyundai Motor America had said the car wouldn’t break cover until the New York Auto Show in April.

A vehicle that made its name in the industry as being a low cost option for those on a budget, Hyundai aims to keep that price structure while out-doing the competition in every other aspect.

Keeping the same styling seen on the Sonata and the new Elantra, the 2012 Accent is powered by a direct-injection 138-hp 1.6-liter 4-cylinder that makes 123 ft-lbs of torque and according to the Canadian press release gets 4.7 L/100 km highway and 6.4 L/100 km regardless of whether you choose the 6-speed automatic or manual. That works out to an incredible 50-mpg highway and 37-mpg city ratings in America.

EDIT: Thanks conwelpic for the heads-up about our mistake in the fuel economy conversion! Believe it or not, the Accent will achieve an est. 50 MPG on the highway according to US ratings!

Having grown in size, the new Accent is now 70mm (2.7-inches) longer between the wheels and 5mm wider. This not only makes for added interior space, but the Accent also delivers a sizable amount of cargo volume with 14 cu-ft of trunk space with the sedan and 17.2 cu-ft with the hatch. Despite all this, weight was kept to a minimum, with the new Accent sedan weighing just 2,392 lbs, while the hatchback model is slightly heavier at 2,429 lbs.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY FOR SUPERIOR FUEL ECONOMY

The 2012 Accent’s all-aluminum 1.6-litre Gamma 4-cylinder engine utilizes the latest engine technology to deliver a class-leading 138 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque and an estimated best-in-class 4.7 L/100 km highway fuel economy rating.

The engine’s most notable feature is its use of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI), a first for the subcompact category. By precisely controlling the injection of fuel, GDI allows for better fuel economy, increased power, and reduced emissions. The application of Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) on both intake and exhaust camshafts allows for further improvements in efficiency, fuel economy, and emissions. To optimize breathing at all engine speeds, a Variable Induction System (VIS) is employed. Other elements resulting in reduced fuel consumption include an Alternator Management System, an offset crankshaft design, and electronic throttle control. To reduce lifetime operation costs and increase reliability, the Gamma features a maintenance-free silent timing chain.

Several other systems have been improved over the outgoing model, each contributing to increased fuel efficiency. All models feature 6-speed automatic or manual transmissions with well-spaced ratios for smooth and efficient power delivery. Low-rolling resistance silica tires and a slippery shape (0.30 cd) reduce friction with the road and the air. Finally, the ActiveECO function modifies engine and transmission control to smooth out throttle response. By turning on the ActiveECO function, drivers can realize up to a seven percent increase in real-world fuel economy. The real-world result of these efficiencies is an estimated highway driving range of 915 km.

Despite the additional content, safety features, and technology packed into the all-new Accent, Hyundai has avoided the typically associated penalty of increased weight. A lower curb weight corresponds to an improvement not only in fuel economy, but all other dynamic areas. In fact, Accent offers the best power-to-weight ratio in its class by far, providing drivers with both low fuel consumption and responsive performance.

SAFETY AS STANDARD – BECAUSE IT JUST MAKES SENSE

Hyundai doesn’t believe that consumers should have to pay a premium for safety, so a long list of safety features are included as standard equipment on all 2012 Accent models. A total of six airbags protect occupants in the event of a collision, including two front impact airbags, two front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and curtain side-impact airbags for front and rear passengers. Active front head restraints and seatbelt pretensioners work in conjunction with the airbag system to aid in preventing injury.

The Accent’s underlying structure is engineered to protect occupants using a Collision Load Dispersion mechanism. The vehicle’s structure distributes the force of an impact in three ways to minimize floor deformation and maintain the integrity of the cabin.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Traction Control work together to help deliver confident handling in all conditions. Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) integrates control of the ESC and motor-driven power steering (MDPS) to provide handling assistance in slippery conditions or in sudden cornering scenarios. The system can deliver up to 8 Newton-meters of counter-steering effort when required to assist the driver in maintaining control of the vehicle.

A key safety element for any vehicle is its braking system. Accent is the only car in the subcompact segment to offer four wheel disc brakes as standard. An Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) featuring Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) is also included. EBD examines the effect of vehicle load on weight distribution and apportions the braking force between front and rear axles so as to maximize stopping ability. In the event of a panic stop, BA ensures that maximum braking force is applied.

SMALL OUTSIDE, BIG INSIDE

Accent rides on a 2,570 mm wheelbase and is 1,700 mm in width, representing an increase of 70 mm and 5 mm respectively over the outgoing model. As a result, Accent enjoys superior interior volume and passenger space. Total length of the new model is 4,370 mm for 4-door versions and 4,115 mm for the 5-door. While the car’s exterior dimensions are consistent with those of traditional subcompacts, Accent is classified by Transport Canada as a compact sedan thanks to its interior volume. To provide perspective, Accent 4-door features more total interior volume than the Honda Civic.

Convenient storage spaces are included throughout the cabin, including bottle holders in each door and a storage tray at the base of the centre console. A deluxe centre console is available, a feature not seen on Fit, Aveo, Fiesta, or Mazda2. Split and fold 60/40 rear seats are available for increased cargo flexibility when transporting longer items.

FEATURES AND AMENITIES WORTHY OF MORE EXPENSIVE VEHICLES

Choosing a subcompact sedan no longer means foregoing comfort and convenience features. A standard 6-way adjustable driver’s seat and standard tilt steering wheel work in conjunction to provide a comfortable driving position. Power door locks, standard on all Accent models, can be paired with the convenience of available power windows, remote keyless entry, and power heated mirrors. A 4-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system with iPod / USB / AUX ports is standard equipment. Those seeking added listening enjoyment can opt for a 6-speaker, 172 watt AM/FM/XM/CD audio system featuring Bluetooth® hands-free phone connectivity and steering wheel audio controls. Cruise control, air conditioning, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, and a power sunroof are all available.

CONFIDENT HANDLING CHARACTERISTICS

The first step toward confident handling dynamics is a rigid structure. To this end, the 2012 Accent employs high-tensile strength steel for a structure which is 22 percent stiffer than the previous generation and 38 percent stiffer than the Toyota Yaris. Increasing the stiffness of the structure allowed Hyundai engineers more flexibility in terms of suspension tuning. The end result is a better balance between handling precision and ride comfort. Accent employs a MacPherson strut front suspension with coil springs, twin-tube gas shock absorbers, and a 21 mm stabilizer bar. The rear suspension is a torsion axle setup with coil springs and monotube shock absorbers.

ATTRACTIVE DESIGN

The 2012 Accent joins the Hyundai line-up sporting the company’s increasingly popular Fluidic Sculpture design. The vehicle’s exterior lines are intended to be futuristic, dynamic, and sleek. In a segment typically associated with staid designs, Accent stands out from the crowd. While the styling provides an attractive form, it’s also functional, featuring a slippery 0.30 coefficient of drag. Five-door models include a sporty trunk lid-mounted spoiler. For an assertive stance, 16” alloy wheels are available.

Each year Kelley Blue Book announces the most researched vehicles of the year on kbb.com. For 2010, the Hyundai Sonata made the list and was deemed the “most noteworthy success story” of the year.
Kbb.com is one of the most-trafficked automotive research websites. Its data is therefore a leading indicator of sales patterns for manufacturers.
“Hyundai’s popular all-new Sonata helped to re-shuffle the deck among the top 20 most-researched new cars of 2010, knocking a few vehicles further down on the list compared to where they were last year,” said James Bell, executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com.
It’s no surprise that the Sonata made the list of most searched vehicles according to Hyundai’s Mike O’Brien, vice president, product and corporate planning, who said, “The research from Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com validates a trend we’ve been following throughout the year. Sonata is clearly making more consumers’ shopping lists than ever before.”

2011 Tuscon Beats out everyone in its Class.. Happy Hyundai Oak Lawn

Base Price: $20,999; as tested: $28,799
The Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage share many components, so I can only attribute the Tucson’s victory in this category to its styling and the fact that it has a lower base price than its South Korean kissing cousin. It has essentially the same platform and engine as the Kia and, behind the wheel, there isn’t much to separate the two. Like the Sportage, the Tucson brought to TestFest this year had a six-speed automatic transmission and a 2.4-litre, four-cylinder engine that develops 176 horsepower. This is considerably more than the third entry in this category – the Mitsubishi RVR.
Funnily enough, the Tucson actually features slightly less interior volume than the Sportage, but both come well-equipped. Elsewhere, standard equipment on the Tucson includes engineering features such as a downhill brake control and hill start assist. These two make the driving experience much more civilized; one will help you descend hills and maintain control and the other allows you to ascend hills from a dead stop without rolling backward. The Tucson also has a standard feature that should be mandatory on all cars sold in Canada: heated front seats – with two settings, no less. That said, so does the Sportage.
In terms of value for money, the Tucson has it over the Mitsubishi RVR in spades, and is probably the logical winner in this category.

Base price: $21,995; as tested: $33,195
The Sportage at TestFest came fully loaded, thus the $33,000-plus price tag. As far as I’m concerned, it’s six of one and half a dozen of the other when it comes to engineering features and driving experience. But the Sportage’s higher price tag probably made the difference here.

Although it finished last, this was my choice. The RVR provided a smoother ride, had better assembly quality, a more linear power delivery and featured a nicer sense of balance. Unfortunately, it also had almost 30 less horsepower than the Tucson and didn’t really come close in terms of what you get for the money.

Which automaker is the most ‘American?’ You might instinctively think of brands like Chevrolet or Ford. But the most American brand may soon become Hyundai.
By next year, the Korean automaker will manufacture 80 percent of the vehicles it sells in the United States domestically. That will be more than any other automaker. By comparison, General Motors says between 60 and 70 percent of vehicles sold in the United States are built here. Ford’s exact figures aren’t available, but it’s estimated to be below 80 percent as well.
“I’m going to build my three best selling cars in the U.S.,” said Hyundai Motor America chief John Krafcik. “Ford builds its best selling car in Mexico.”
Technically, a greater percentage of Hyundai’s lineup will soon be produced in the U.S. compared to the Big Three, but the numbers don’t paint the whole picture. The Big Three produce a far greater volume of cars in the U.S. than Hyundai. For example, if GM only built about 66% of the vehicles it sold in the U.S. domestically in 2009 that would mean that GM would have more than tripled the 400,000 cars Hyundai expects to build in the U.S. next year.
There are two reasons why foreign brands like Hyundai are eager to build in the U.S. For starters, it protects them against changes in the value of their own currency relative to the dollar. Secondly, it makes it easier to address rapid shifts in consumer demands. For example, if gas prices suddenly increase and more consumers demand Elantras over Sonatas, domestic factories can alter productive and deliveries to dealers quickly.

A car-based CUV redesigned for a smooth ride
Pitched in the foothills of the Cascade Range southeast of Seattle, the Washington state route 169 winds
through crossroads communities like Maple Valley and Morganville on the way to Black Diamond.
This twisty asphalt strip, rolling over fir-tipped hills and cutting more than a few acute-angled corners,
seems like it was designed expressly to show off the road-hugging agility and sticky tire traction of the
agile Tucson, Hyundai's crossover utility vehicle for the compact class.
Formatted with swoopy lines which completely disguise the two-box body of a five-door hatchback
wagon, Tucson rides on a car's chassis and scores a radical make-over for 2010 with an expanded
structure, bold new Euro-style body design and the passenger compartment laced with more safety
equipment and downright fancy features.
The 2010 Tucson measures 3.3 inches longer and an inch wider than the previous edition, yet its 61
pounds lighter.
A generous wheelbase length of 103.9 inches and a wide wheel track of 64.2 inches up front and 62.4
inches in back set up a long and broad foundation for stability when steering through a set of curves.
And, unlike some wagons with a solid rear truck axle and crude leaf springs, Tucson carries four-wheel
independent suspension components -- a MacPherson strut-type front suspension with gas-charged
hydraulic shocks and stabilizer bar and an independent multi-link design in the rear using coil springs
and gas-charged hydraulic shocks and stabilizer bar -- which bring more control over the vehicle for a
driver and more comfortable ride sensations for passengers.
As a result, Tucson offers the easy-to-drive manners of a refined sedan.
Tucson also brings a forceful four-cylinder powertrain distributed across two tiers of trim -- the base
GLS and deluxe Limited.
And the wagon supports two traction formats for both trims with front-wheel-drive (FWD) or all-wheeldrive
(AWD).
The optional electronic AWD system normally directs all power from the engine to the front wheels, thus
reducing the fuel consumption. When front wheels slip, however, the device can divert some of the power
to turn the rear wheels. A driver-activated locking switch for the center differential fixes the torque split
evenly at 50/50 front/rear for tackling slippery dirt trails.
Hyundai packs the 2010 Tucson with a long list of safety gear.
Each trim edition stocks passive safety systems like frontal air bags and seat-mounted side-impact air
bags front and rear plus curtain-style air bags above outboard seats on two rows. And Hyundai adds
active adjustable head restraints for the front seatbacks.
For active safety, every issue also has a disc brake at every wheel, with electronic linkage to a fourchannel
anti-lock brake system (ABS) with electronic brake force distribution (EBD), plus hill-start assist
control (HSC) and downhill brake control (DBC).
Each Tucson trim also carries an electronic stability control (ESC) device which automatically
coordinates the brakes and throttle to check against lateral wheel skidding.
All versions pull from one eco-efficient powertrain.
The dual-cam four-cylinder Theta II engine displaces 2.4 liters and has Hyundai's CVVT (continuously
variable valve timing) equipment on both camshafts and VIS (variable induction system) for better
engine breathing.
The Tucson GLS edition comes with a standard six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed
electronic automatic rigged with Hyundai's Shiftronic manual mode.
Tucson Limited edition gets the six-speed Shiftronic automatic exclusively.
EPA fuel economy figures reach as high as 31 mpg for highway driving using the automatic transmission,
or 28 mpg for highway driving with AWD traction.
Tucson's slick body styling comes out of Hyundai's European design and technical center in Frankfurt,
Germany.
Theme for the exterior is a fluidity of lines drawn in rectangular format but with curt prow and radically
canted windshield and a tapered canopy over the cabin with narrow windows and side pillars muted to
forge the profile of a slinky two-door coupe.
Hyundai labels the design language for Tucson as "Fluidic Sculpture" inspired by nature to produce the
illusion of motion from curvy shapes of rigid surfaces.
Still, you can't miss that brash face sporting narrow eye-slit headlamp clusters on front corners flanking
a trapezoidal grille with chrome bar and black fins.
Side panels are chiseled with ripples and bulges for the swollen wheel wells fore and aft.
The blunted rump looks clean with a disguised hatchback door, twin-lamp taillight assemblies wrapping
around corners and a body-colored bumper swooping low.
Tucson's rigid structure whittles out a rather spacious cabin and a utilitarian cargo bay.
Door sills are set low like the sills on a car so you can slip aboard easily.
Seats are tall so you sit up for good visibility.
Eace cabin layout pitches a pair of bolstered buckets in front
flanking a versatile console. On the second row a bench is designed
to seat two comfortably but hold three riders if necessary. The
seatback splits 60/40 and folds down to expand the cargo area.
The storage area is generous at 25.7 cubic feet but with rear
seatbacks folded it expands to 55.8 cubic feet.
It also has under-floor cargo storage with a reversible cover.
Tucson GLS comes with a load of standard equipment, including
air conditioning, power controls for windows and door locks and
mirrors, a remote keyless entry system with alarm, tilting steering wheel, two power outlets (front and
cargo area), bottle holders in all four doors, rear wiper and washer, and an audio system with
M/FM/CD/MP3/Satellite Radio and six speakers plus iPod/USB input jacks.
Optional packages load more gear -- Popular Equipment, Navigation, Premium Equipment.
Price points for the 2010 Tucson begin at $18,995 for a GLS FWD M/6. Top model Limited AWD A/6
lists at $25,845.

MOST FUEL-EFFICIENT AUTOMAKER IN AMERICA, HYUNDAI, SAYS LINEUP TO AVERAGE MINIMUM 50 MPG BY 2025

Hyundai Motor America, the leading fuel economy auto manufacturer in the U.S., announced plans to maintain its leadership and achieve a corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) rating of at least 50 miles per gallon (mpg) by 2025 for its lineup of passenger cars and light duty trucks.
Current National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regulations require automakers to achieve a CAFE rating of 35.5 mpg by 2016. Before those rules were enacted last year, Hyundai had already announced its own plan to reach 35 mpg by 2015. Hyundai’s announcement of this longer-term goal of delivering a minimum 50 mpg CAFE rating by 2025 is consistent with its philosophy of setting stretch objectives that align its resources, challenge its team members, and delight consumers and society.
“We’re committed to setting the pace in this industry on fuel economy, and we’re inspired by the possibilities that our advanced Blue Drive technologies afford,” said John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America president and CEO. “Getting to 50 mpg and beyond seems like a huge leap, but by making this commitment and aligning our R&D initiatives now, we know we can get there.”
Hyundai has shown that customers will flock to high-quality, stylish products offering high fuel economy. The game-changing all-new 2011 Hyundai Sonata is the first mid-size family sedan to offer only 4-cylinder engines. Sonata achieves an EPA highway rating of 35 mpg, yet leads competitors in power output through the use of advanced gasoline direct injection (GDI). Sonata’s sales were up 48 percent in the first half of 2010, while its transaction prices and residual values now exceed those of most mid-size competitors. The Sonata and its 2.4-liter Theta II GDI engine are built at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama.
“This is our simple formula for success in the automobile industry,” said Krafcik. “Rather than fighting fuel economy regulation, we encourage our Hyundai engineers to deliver more fuel efficiency, faster, accelerating the benefits to our customers, society, and the planet.”
Since becoming the fuel economy leader in the 2008 model year, Hyundai Motor America market share is up more than 50 percent.

A Global Research and Development Effort
Hyundai’s plan to achieve an average of 50 mpg or better encompasses a full line of products, from small cars to larger family haulers. It leverages Hyundai’s global Blue Drive strategy, aligning R&D resources at its engineering centers in California, Michigan, Korea, India and Germany to develop more fuel-efficient vehicle technologies. Key enablers are improvements and innovation in powertrains including gasoline direct injection, turbocharging, electric hybrids, plug-in hybrids, light-weight materials and design, and more.

2011 Sonata Leads the Way
The 2011 Sonata, which went on sale earlier this year, features a 2.4-liter Theta II GDI 4-cylinder as its base engine, offering up to 200 horsepower and 35 miles per gallon on the highway. By offering only 4-cylinder engines and through other weight optimization efforts, Hyundai engineers were able to reduce the weight of the Sonata by 130 pounds.
This fall, Hyundai will launch the 2.0T 4-cylinder turbo option for the 2011 Sonata and the company’s first hybrid in the United States. The Sonata Hybrid features a 2.4-liter Theta II 4-cylinder gasoline engine mated to an electric motor-boosted 6-speed automatic transmission. The Sonata Hybrid incorporates an industry-first lithium polymer battery, which packs greater power density and stability into a smaller, more package-efficient space.
Sonata’s Hybrid Blue Drive system eschews the typical continuously variable transmission for a more consumer-friendly step-shift 6-speed transmission, which makes the system more cost-effective and more readily adaptable to other future applications. Sonata exemplifies Hyundai’s efforts to bring advanced power train technologies to the mainstream.

Fuel Economy Leadership Since 2008 Model Year
Hyundai achieved fuel economy leadership by topping the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy report for the 2008 model year. The EPA 2009 Light-Duty Automotive Technology and Fuel Economy Trends Report indicates that Hyundai has the highest 2008 model year laboratory 55/45 fuel economy at 30.9 mpg. Hyundai passed all major manufacturers in combined passenger car and light duty truck fuel efficiency including traditional leaders like Honda and Toyota. The report demonstrates the effectiveness of Hyundai’s value-driven fuel-efficiency strategy, which focuses on the intelligent application of cost-effective technologies.



Hyundai is poised to maintain its fuel-economy leadership as projected data for the 2009 model year shows Hyundai retaining its edge over the industry. Forecasts show a 2009 model-year fuel economy rating of 30.1 mpg for passenger cars and light duty trucks. Hyundai is also the only automaker to top 30 mpg in the 2009 projections.[1]

Hyundai To Build A Pick Up truck for North America Happy Hyundai Oak Lawn

Once known only for tiny, cheap economy cars, Hyundai has grown in recent years to build everything from midsize SUVs to luxury cars – but a pickup?  That’s the rumor.
PickupTrucks.com reports, “The Korean automaker, which has made major inroads recently into the American car and crossover markets with critically acclaimed new products, recently held research clinics with truck buyers in California and Texas using a [Dodge] Ram 1500 customized with a Hyundai-style grille and interior tweaks.”  Prospective customers reportedly showed enough interest “to keep the project moving forward.”  Automakers considering moving into a new type of product will often modify a competitor’s version first, to test ideas.
A spokesman Hyundai’s American arm told PickupTrucks.com “pickup trucks are not a high priority for us.”  But that doesn’t explain the focus groups.
Autoblog sees too much risk in the project to make it worthwhile.  “Nissan never made a significant dent in the big truck segment with the six-year-old Titan,” they note.  Meanwhile, “The enormous resources that Toyota has poured into the development and production of the Tundra are considered by some analysts to be one of the causes of the automaker's recent spate of quality problems and recalls.”
But few analysts thought Hyundai could pull of a luxury car or a legitimate rear-wheel drive sports car, either – so the success of the Genesis sedan and coupe took many critics by surprise.

2012 Hyundai Accent

2012 Hyundai Accent hatchback –



Eagle-eyed Autoblog reader James spotted a camouflaged compact hatchback sitting in a parking lot in South Korea the other day, and fortunately for us, he had a camera with him. At first glance, this is obviously a new Hyundai based on the upward sweeping crease along the side that is characteristic of Hyundai's new 'fluidic sculpture' design language.



Closer examination indicates that this is almost certainly the five-door hatchback version of the new Verna/Accent that debuted at the Beijing Motor Show in April. The wheels are the same as the ones we saw on the Verna and the side crease extends ahead of the door cut-line which differs from the Elantra that debuted a week later at the Busan show in Korea.



Also somewhat visible is the rocker panel indentation ahead of the rear wheels that is characteristic of the Accent. We expect the North American market Accent to debut some time this Fall, perhaps at the Los Angeles or Detroit Auto Show.

Hyundai Motor America is expanding its Tucson lineup with an all-new entry-level GL model equipped with a powerful yet fuel-efficient 2.0-liter Theta II four-cylinder engine for the 2011 model year. The 2011 Hyundai Tucson GL is available at dealerships now and is only available in Front Wheel Drive (FWD). In addition, the 2011 GLS trim level receives upgraded model content and a premium suspension is now standard on the Limited model. The Tucson is the first Hyundai CUV (Crossover Utility Vehicle) to be designed and engineered in Europe at Hyundai’s Frankfurt-based design and technical centers. It features precedent-setting engineering including advanced weight saving technology and two eco-efficient Theta II four-cylinder engines delivering up to 31 mpg on the highway. True to Hyundai form, the Tucson applies life-saving safety technologies as standard equipment while offering Downhill Brake Control (DBC) and Hillstart Assist Control (HAC). Likewise, to keep its passengers informed and comfortable Tucson integrates Hyundai’s first available panoramic sunroof, touch-screen navigation and a Bluetooth® hands-free phone system.

CHOICE OF TWO POWERFUL AND FUEL-EFFICIENT POWERTRAINS
The entry-level Tucson GL is equipped with a high output 2.0-liter Theta II four-cylinder engine that produces 165 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 146 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,600 rpm. Fuel economy estimates for the Tucson GL Front Wheel Drive model with available six speed automatic transmission are 23 mpg city/31 mpg highway. The Front Wheel Drive 5-speed manual transmission model gets an estimated 20 city/27 highway. The 2.0-liter Theta-II also offers Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) (intake and exhaust camshaft phaser). Major improvements include the application of a two-stage Variable Intake System (VIS) which enables switching between long and short intake manifolds resulting in an across-the-board performance increase. To reduce internal friction, engineers have applied a Diamond-Like-Coating (DLC) to the top surface of the valve tappets resulting in improved fuel efficiency. Engineers also expended considerable time and effort optimizing the oil pressure to achieve an ideal balance between durability and fuel economy. Tucson GL is available with a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC®.
Tucson GLS and Limited feature the Theta II 2.4-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder engine. The Theta II is rated at 176 horsepower and 168 lb.-ft. of torque with Federal emissions and 170 horsepower and 163 lb.-ft. of torque with California emissions. This high-tech, all-aluminum, 16-valve engine features CVVT on both camshafts and a VIS for better engine breathing. In the green states, the 2011 Tucson GLS and Limited models are certified as Partial Zero Emission Vehicles (PZEV) which means they are as clean as many hybrids. In fact, Tucson GLS and Limited are more fuel-efficient than Honda CRV, Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape four-cylinder engines. Tucson GLS and Limited boast an impressive estimated 22 mpg city/31 mpg highway fuel economy rating with the six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC® and Front Wheel Drive. Tucson also features low rolling resistance silica tires to contribute to the 31 mpg highway. Key attributes of Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy are demonstrated through the Tucson’s flowing lines, full surfaces and muscular presence. This athletic design language is highlighted by bold, dynamic graphic elements such as the new Hyundai family hexagonal front grille, aggressive lower air intake, sculptured hood creases, swept back headlights, sleek greenhouse and wraparound taillights. Chrome grille accents and door handles lend sophistication to the top-of-the-line Tucson Limited.
The Tucson combines dynamic, sculpted, performance-oriented styling with thoughtful everyday utility to create a vehicle that will change the way consumers, especially younger car buyers, think about compact crossovers.
With an overall length of 173.2 inches, a width of 71.7 inches and a height of 66.3 inches (with roof rails), Tucson has a great stance and road presence. The design team fused a light, elegant and sporty upper body with belt lines flowing off both the front and rear wheel arches, to a tough, planted lower body so that it is assertive in the way it sits on the road.
The profile of Tucson features a sports car-like theme with a double-zigzag treatment for the wheel arches that wrap around the available Euroflange 18-inch alloy wheels. The concave sills have a wedge-shaped profile that extends rearward and wraps around into the rear bumper, a first of its kind design in a vehicle of this type. The profile is further enhanced by modern silver roof rails.


 With high-mounted taillights, multi-surfaced glass and a sculpted bumper, the rear of Tucson also showcases dynamic design elements.

The Tucson’s widespread use of high-strength steel provides increased strength at a lower body weight. High-strength steel allows the four-wheel independent suspension to work optimally. At 3,197 pounds, the automatic transmission Tucson GLS is lighter than its competitors while offering more interior room than Rogue and Escape, with body-bending rigidity 38 percent higher than the Rogue. This weight efficient unibody architecture allows for Tucson to achieve 31 mpg estimated EPA highway rating.

FUN TO DRIVE   
The 2011 Tucson’s athletic shape is complemented with agile handling and responsive steering. Tucson uses MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension systems for more precise wheel control and a smoother ride. All four wheels are controlled by coil springs and fade-resistant gas-charged dampers. The front suspension has a 25 mm hollow stabilizer bar to save weight, while the rear suspension has a 18 mm solid stabilizer bar. Larger stabilizer bars keep the vehicle very flat during cornering and help provide quick turn-in response.  Lastly, the Limited trim receives an upgraded premium ride thanks to sophisticated Sachs shock absorbers.
Rack-and-pinion Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS) also contributes to the Tucson’s nimble and refined handling dynamics while saving fuel and reducing interior noise. The MDPS system uses the vehicle’s electrical system for power (unlike older hydraulic systems), allowing for increased fuel economy and calibrated steering efforts through all vehicle speed ranges. 
Due to the suspension geometry and wider track width that enables greater turn angles, Tucson’s turning circle is 34.7 feet – an advantage Tucson drivers will appreciate in their daily driving and parking. In fact, Tucson’s turning diameter bests Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.

FUEL ECONOMY INNOVATIONS
To help Tucson drivers get the most out of their vehicles, Hyundai offers a standard trip computer and economy indicator. The trip computer provides distance to empty, average fuel consumption, average vehicle speed, elapsed time and instant fuel economy. The “Eco Indicator” on automatic transmission models nestled between the speedometer and tachometer displays a green LED light in accordance with fuel-efficient driving behavior. Fuel savings in the range of 15 to 17 percent are attainable with the automatic Eco Indicator. Manual transmission models have a shift indicator to inform drivers of the optimal time to upshift and downshift. Fuel savings in the range 7 to 9 percent are attainable with the manual Eco Gear Shift Indicator.

TWO AVAILABLE TRANSMISSIONS
Hyundai’s commitment to making the Tucson extremely fuel efficient continues through the availability of two transmissions: a six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC® manual control and a five-speed manual transmission.
Hyundai's six-speed automatic transaxle helps the company meet its goals of improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. Shifts are silky-smooth with an option of manual control through the SHIFTRONIC feature. Designed for transverse engine applications in passenger cars and SUVs, the compact transmission puts Hyundai into an elite class of auto manufacturers who have designed proprietary six-speed automatic transmissions. The strength of the design is its unique layout which makes it smaller, more compact and lighter than any other six-speed on the market today.
For the customer, the six-speed delivers a performance edge while helping to bring a gain in highway fuel economy. When it comes to transmissions, more gears are definitely better.  This enables closer spacing between gear ratios providing a better balance of performance and fuel economy while the wide overall gear ratio helps deliver strong acceleration.
There is no dipstick in the gearbox. Instead it is filled with automatic transmission fluid that is good for the life of the vehicle under normal usage conditions, thereby reducing maintenance costs.  The gearbox has three planetary gearsets and a unique flat torque converter which shortens the unit's overall length by 0.47 inches. Four pinion differentials improve durability and further minimize size.

ALL WEATHER PERFORMANCE
To make the Tucson even more versatile, Hyundai engineers added an advanced electronic All Wheel Drive (AWD) system designed by JTEKT. The AWD system will automatically activate under any driving condition when needed, distributing the power equally and optimizing driving performance. Under normal driving, the system only distributes power to the front wheels, thereby reducing fuel consumption. The system includes a driver-selectable AWD lock allowing for a 50/50 torque split between the front and rear wheels for off-road and very slippery conditions. 
For even more driver control, the 2011 Tucson features Hyundai’s Hillstart Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Brake Control (DBC). HAC is designed to minimize rolling backwards on steep ascents. By selecting the DBC switch, the Hydro-Electronic Control unit manages the wheel speed sensors, steering angle sensor and acceleration sensor to maintain control and speed on steep declines without having to use the brake. Neither of these controls are available on CR-V, Escape or Rogue and are typically found on luxury SUVs with much higher price tags.
 
THOUGHTFUL INTERIOR DESIGN
Inside, the five-seat Tucson offers a commanding view of the road and evokes an adventurous ambience that is also laid-back and relaxing. The needs of the driver are fully accommodated, with the interior blending aspects of the outdoors and an urban lifestyle. For example, Hyundai’s first panoramic sunroof brings the outside “inside” for all passengers.
An X-shaped visual theme is repeated across numerous areas of the cabin while metal paint accents provide flashes of visual brilliance.
Shapely seats feature center panels trimmed in breathable fabric with attractive and functional cushion side bolsters, plus additional lateral support for occupants’ shoulders. On the insert of the cloth seats, there is a hexagonal pattern stitched into the fabric matching the new front grille design.
The long wheelbase and generous width of the Tucson, combined with Hyundai’s expertise in interior packaging, have produced an interior that delivers class-leading rear legroom. The Tucson has more passenger volume than Rogue and Escape at 101.9 cubic feet. In fact, Tucson has more interior volume than Acura RDX and more cargo volume than Infiniti FX. The spacious cabin on Tucson Limited is further enhanced for all passengers by Hyundai’s first available panoramic sunroof. The front panel of the UV-blocking sunroof can either tilt open or open completely by sliding up and over the rear panel, while an anti-pinch system guards against injuries. Finally, with the extra wheelbase length, Hyundai engineers were able to expand front seat tracks to provide a comfortable seating position for taller drivers.
The high-tech cockpit comes standard with Hyundai’s signature blue lighting, power windows, power door locks, fold-away mirrors and remote keyless entry with alarm and panic button. Bluetooth hands-free phone system with voice recognition and steering wheel audio and cruise controls are also available. Another premium feature in the Tucson Limited is a CleanAir Ionizer that automatically kills germs within the system when the heater or air conditioner is running.
Other available features include leather seating surfaces, heated front seats, power driver seat with lumbar support, automatic headlights, side repeater exterior mirrors, front wiper de-icer and dual front automatic temperature control.
Audiophiles will love Tucson’s 160-watt AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system with six speakers. This system includes XM Satellite Radio® and iPod®/USB auxiliary inputs and an iPod cable as standard equipment.
The 2011 Tucson can be further upgraded with an optional navigation system with rearview camera. Shifting into reverse automatically turns on the rear-view camera that provides a wide-angle view reducing the risk of accidents. This navigation system also provides Bluetooth streaming audio capability. This easy-to-use unit can be controlled via a 6.5-inch LCD touch-screen or voice-activation by headliner-mounted microphone. The voice recognition allows the user to control the navigation system, audio system and phone commands. The system comes matched with the 360-watt premium audio system that includes an external amplifier and subwoofer. It plays compact discs, accesses digital music files employing Bluetooth streaming audio or allows driver and passenger to access their personal listening devices through the iPod/USB/auxiliary inputs. Bluetooth audio wirelessly streams music from a phone to the audio system. And with a Bluetooth-enabled phone, a local restaurant can be called for reservations before plotting the route. The XM Satellite Radio interface is also integrated into the navigation unit and features channel logos and real-time NavTraffic with detour function. XM Satellite Radio and NavTraffic service are complimentary for the first 90 days.

ADVANCED STANDARD SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES:  PART OF HYUNDAI’S ASSURANCE COMMITMENT
            The 2005 Tucson was the first Hyundai model to feature standard ESC (Electronic Stability Control) upon its launch in 2004. It was also the first vehicle under $20,000 with standard ESC and six airbags. The Tucson started Hyundai’s approach to combining state-of-the-art safety and affordability and this approach lives on in the 2011 Tucson. The Tucson is loaded with life-saving standard safety features including ESC with traction control, six airbags and active front head restraints. Its braking system features four-wheel disc brakes controlled by an advanced four-channel ABS with Brake Assist, providing maximum braking force when a panic stop is detected, and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) to optimize brake performance with uneven weight distribution.
            ESC compares the driver’s intended course with the vehicle’s actual response. If needed, ESC brakes individual front or rear wheels and/or reduces engine power to help correct understeer or oversteer. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) studies show SUVs equipped with ESC experience 67 percent fewer single-vehicle crashes, and 63 percent fewer single-vehicle fatalities. In addition, a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found that ESC reduces the risk of fatal single-vehicle crashes by 49 percent.
The Tucson is engineered to provide its passengers with multiple defensive safety layers. The steel unibody has integrated crumple zones and a high-tensile front sub-frame designed to work together to reduce the forces that typically reach the passenger compartment. Particular attention has been paid to increasing the stiffness of the front side members which have been enlarged and straightened. Also, the center pillars serve as the anchors of a new ring structure which improves overall side structure stiffness while also creating more room for the door armrest and seat. All four doors also have internal guard beams to protect passengers in a side-impact collision.
            The entire body shell has been made stiffer and lighter thanks to its extensive use of ultra-high tensile strength steel, which comprises 68.9 percent of the shell. Also, the use of Tailor Welded Blanks (TWB) has been expanded on key structural members. TWB assemblies combine steels of different thickness and grades using a sophisticated laser welding and stamping process to achieve an optimal stiffness-to-weight ratio. TWBs reduce body weight while enhancing crash energy management. These safety systems earn the 2011 Tucson NHTSA’s top five-star crash test rating for front and side impacts.
Tucson’s standard front-seat active head restraints help prevent whiplash by automatically reducing the space between a front occupant’s head and the head restraint during certain rear collisions and are highly recommended by safety organizations such as the IIHS.
The Tucson’s passenger restraint systems also help minimize injury. Three-point belts are provided at all five seating positions, and the front seatbelts have pretensioners and load limiters. There are two outboard rear seat Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) child-seat anchors. 
Elongated flush-mounted headlamps not only add a strong sense of style but also feature projector beam lenses for improved night-time driving safety. Side mirror housings have been modified to reduce wind noise and also feature an integrated repeater lamp for improved visibility on the Limited trim.
            A total of six airbags are positioned in the Tucson’s interior. Dual advanced frontal airbags are complemented by front seat-mounted side-impact airbags and roof-mounted side-curtain airbags with rollover sensors that cover both the front and rear seat rows. The combination of side and curtain airbags, which help protect the head and body during side impacts, can reduce fatalities by more than 52 percent, according to the IIHS. 
Tucson also features a standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) which alerts drivers if one or more tires are under inflated.

The 2011 Tucson is offered in nine colors with an optimum mix between lighter and darker colors to satisfy regional preferences. The colors are Cotton White, Diamond Silver, Graphite Gray, Ash Black, Garnet Red, Iris Blue, Aurora Blue, Chai Bronze and Kiwi Green.  Three interior colors, Black, Taupe and Saddle, are available.
